18th Century English Georgian Yew Wood Side Table with Single Drawer

$7,500

An English yew wood side table dating to the 18th century, with a beautifully figured rectangular top whose warm amber and reddish-brown tones reveal the distinctive knots, swirls and natural variation for which yew is prized. The top is formed from several boards and finished with softly rounded corners and a molded edge, giving the table a particularly inviting, tactile quality.

A single frieze drawer is fitted with a decorative brass bail handle, while the slender square legs are joined to the apron by shaped corner brackets. The restraint of the base provides a pleasing counterpoint to the richly figured surface, allowing the character of the wood to remain the principal decorative element.

With its relatively low height and useful proportions, the table could serve beside a sofa or armchair, as a lamp table, or as a small writing surface in a study or library. It would also work beautifully as an occasional table in a layered interior, where the warmth and complexity of the old yew wood can be appreciated at close range.
