English 18th Century Chinoiserie Japanned Cabinet on 19th Century Stand

$18,500

An English 18th century chinoiserie lacquer cabinet, raised on a later 19th century black lacquer stand in the Chinese taste. The cabinet retains its original form with twin doors opening to an elaborate interior fitted with multiple graduated drawers, each decorated in gilt lacquer with landscape, floral, and figural scenes.

The exterior presents a richly aged black ground with gilt chinoiserie decoration depicting pagodas, birds in flight, stylized trees, and mythological beasts. The doors are mounted with ornate pierced brass escutcheons and engraved hinges of good quality, consistent with 18th century English japanned work inspired by imported Asian lacquer.

Inside, the fitted drawers continue the decorative scheme, each panel individually highlighted in gilt against a black ground. The scale and configuration suggest use as a collector’s cabinet or table cabinet, designed to house documents, small valuables, or objects of curiosity.

The 19th century stand, finished in black lacquer, features carved apron detailing and square legs with stylized Chinese-inspired bracket work. The pairing is harmonious and visually strong, elevating the cabinet to an architectural presence while remaining historically appropriate in taste.

A striking and decorative example of English chinoiserie furniture with excellent interior complexity.
