English Circa 1900 Carved Wood Mirror with Grapes, Owl, Squirrel and Turtle
$3,750
This English carved wood mirror from circa 1900 features a richly decorative frame with raised naturalistic carving set against a textured ground. The composition is especially charming, with grapes, leafy vines, flowering branches, an owl perched along the upper rail, a squirrel at the lower right, and a turtle carved along the lower left side. These small animal details give the mirror a whimsical woodland character while still keeping the overall look refined and antique.
The frame has a dark brown finish with visible wood grain and subtle tonal variation across the carved and textured surfaces. The top and bottom rails are broader and more heavily decorated, while the vertical sides frame the mirror plate with floral and foliate arrangements. The carving is not as deeply architectural as Black Forest work, but it clearly belongs to the late 19th to early 20th century taste for naturalistic, rustic, and decorative carved wood objects.
Its moderate scale makes it easy to place in an entry, bedroom, powder room, library, or above a small console. The combination of vegetation, fruit, and woodland animals gives it warmth and personality without becoming overly ornate.
