English Georgian Mahogany Drop-Leaf Pembroke Table, circa 1810
$5,500
An English mahogany Pembroke table dating to the late Georgian period, circa 1810. Designed for flexibility within the domestic interior, the table has a rectangular top flanked by two hinged drop leaves. With both leaves lowered, it occupies a compact footprint; opened, it provides a generously proportioned surface suitable for dining, writing or display.
A single drawer is fitted into one end and retains a brass bail handle and shaped key escutcheon. The table stands on four straight square legs joined by an unusual X-form stretcher. At its center, the stretcher incorporates a shaped platform with scalloped edges, adding an understated decorative element to an otherwise restrained design.
The mahogany has developed a warm, mellow color, with attractive grain visible across the top and leaves. Practical, adaptable tables of this type were designed to be moved wherever needed and were often used for breakfast, correspondence, games or occasional dining. Its relatively narrow closed width makes this example particularly useful today as a console, side table or compact dining table, while its aged surface gives it the authentic character of a well-used Georgian furnishing.
