English Jacobean Revival Walnut Upholstered Footstool, circa 1880

$3,995

A generously proportioned English walnut footstool dating to the late 19th century, circa 1880. Its substantial frame draws upon Jacobean furniture of the 17th century, combining bold block-and-turned legs with an intricate arrangement of turned stretchers.

Each leg alternates squared sections with rounded and ring-turned elements before terminating in a compressed ball foot. Turned stretchers connect the legs on all four sides, while additional H-Form crossing supports beneath the seat reinforce the broad frame. The walnut has developed a warm, varied patina that emphasizes the sculptural quality of the turning.

The stool has been upholstered in a neutral, textured fabric that complements the rich brown tones of the wood. A line of individually applied brass nailheads finishes the lower edge of the upholstered seat, adding restrained decorative detail.

Broad and comfortably cushioned, the piece can serve as a traditional footstool, an occasional seat or a compact ottoman placed before a sofa or fireside chair. Its architectural base and understated upholstery allow it to work easily in both traditional and more contemporary interiors.
