An English oil on board equestrian painting from the 19th century by John Alfred Wheeler (1821-1903) titled “The Watering Trough”. Created by British artist John Alfred Wheeler during the later years of the 19th century when Wheeler spent time in Bath, this horizontal painting depicts in very close view three horses, two white ones and a brown one, drinking from a water trough. Their heads standing out impeccably on a clear blue sky, the horses are leaning their heads inside a circular rustic looking wooden container. The water dripping from the horse’s mouth on the left creates an almost photographic effect, as if the image had been captured by a camera. The painting is set inside a molded wooden frame whose warm patina compliments the ensemble beautifully. Wheeler, considered to be one of the most accomplished animal artists of his day, is the founder of a dynasty of painters. With its elegant subject and striking depiction, this English oil on board painting by J Wheeler circa 1880-1890 will enliven any wall beautifully!
