English Regency Mahogany Leather Bench with Gilt Dolphin Armrests
$5,995
This elegant English Regency bench, circa 1820–1840, combines graceful Regency lines with finely crafted detailing. The solid mahogany frame sits upon four outward‐splayed sabre legs, their sleek profiles defining the era’s taste for classical simplicity. At each end, the armrests terminate in carved giltwood dolphins—symbols of protection and good fortune—wrapped in finely carved gilt bands that echo the period’s fascination with marine motifs.
The gently curved seat, upholstered in supple muted turquoise leather, measures at a comfortable 16″ seat height; the overall bench stands 26¾″ high. Rows of hand‐applied brass nailhead trim secure the leather to the frame and provide a subtle decorative border. A shaped mahogany apron below the seat is adorned with a central gilt‐metal foliate mount, enhancing the piece’s refined character.
Ideal as a hallway accent, bedroom footboard, or living‐room seating, this Regency bench melds functional form with aristocratic flair. Its original early 19th‐century construction and well‐preserved finish make it a distinguished example of English furniture design in the post‐Napoleonic era.
