French Circa 1900 Tramp Art Mirror with Gilt Accents and Chip-Carved Frame
$2,600
This French Tramp Art mirror from circa 1900 features a rectangular wooden frame decorated with dense chip-carved borders, raised corner blocks, and applied gilt accents. The frame is built with the layered, hand-worked construction typical of Tramp Art, with repeated notching and pyramid-like carving that creates a strong textured surface.
The warm brown finish shows natural age variation, with lighter tones visible along the carved edges and areas of wear. Each corner is emphasized by a raised square block covered in geometric chip carving, giving the mirror depth and a distinctly handmade architectural quality. Small gilt rosettes are applied along the side rails and corner blocks, while crossed gilt elements at the top and bottom add a decorative contrast to the darker carved wood. These accents appear to be giltwood or gilt composition.
The mirror’s narrow vertical format makes it easy to place in an entry, hallway, powder room, bedroom, or above a small chest or console. It has a rustic yet refined folk-art presence, with enough detail to function as a decorative wall object as well as a practical mirror. The later backing and mirror plate allow the piece to remain usable while preserving the antique carved frame.
