French Restoration Mahogany and Marble Bedside Serving Table, circa 1830
$3,995
A refined French mahogany and marble bedside serving table dating to the Restauration period, circa 1830. Its unusually practical two-tier design incorporates white marble surfaces framed by a warm mahogany structure, combining elegant cabinetmaking with the hygienic, easily cleaned materials favored for bedroom furnishings.
The upper marble shelf is enclosed by a low gallery, while a second, more generously proportioned marble surface rests below. Gracefully shaped side panels create an open front and are pierced with oval handholds, allowing the table to be moved conveniently. Four slender, tapered legs with restrained ring turning give the piece a light architectural profile and terminate in brass-capped casters.
Known in France as a type of table de malade, this form was designed for use beside a bed, where its marble shelves could accommodate refreshments, medicines, books or personal necessities. Today, its compact proportions make it equally useful as a distinctive bedside table, drinks stand or occasional table. The contrast between richly figured mahogany and softly veined white marble gives this functional antique an especially polished presence.
