Japanese Imari Porcelain Square Platter with Scalloped Rim, Meiji Period
$1,850
This 19th century Japanese Imari porcelain platter features a distinctive square form with softly scalloped edges, measuring 16.5 inches by 16.5 inches with a depth of 2.5 inches. The composition is richly decorated in the traditional Imari palette of underglaze cobalt blue and iron red, with touches of gilt and soft green enamel.
The central panel depicts an elaborate floral arrangement issuing from a stylized jardinière, framed within a geometric blue lattice border. Surrounding reserves alternate between phoenix, scrolling foliage, and textile-inspired motifs rendered in iron red and cobalt, with delicate golden accents heightening the design. The overall composition balances bold color blocks with intricate line work, characteristic of late 19th century export wares produced for Western markets.
The underside is decorated in underglaze blue with stylized motifs and retains a neatly finished foot rim. The sculpted, slightly undulating rim adds dimension and enhances display presence.
This platter works equally well as a wall-mounted decorative piece or as a striking table centerpiece.
