Large 18th Century Italian Walnut Refectory Table with Trestle Base

$27,750

This substantial Italian table dates to the 18th century and is crafted in solid walnut, featuring a long rectangular top resting on a classic trestle base. Measuring 108 inches in length, it was clearly conceived as a refectory or communal table, intended for large dining rooms, monasteries, or rural palazzi where durability and scale were essential.

The top is constructed from wide walnut planks arranged in a framed, parquet-like pattern, with pronounced wear, softened edges, and deep surface patina consistent with centuries of use. Tool marks, age cracks, and surface irregularities are visible throughout, contributing to the table’s strong vernacular character rather than detracting from it. The thickness of the top and the rounded, time-worn perimeter give the piece real visual weight and authenticity.

The base consists of two solid pedestal supports connected by a full-length stretcher, providing excellent stability. The feet are broad condiwith hand-shaped contours that reflect traditional Italian craftsmanship of the period. The entire structure sits low and grounded, with proportions that feel architectural rather than decorative.

This table works equally well as a grand dining table, a library or study table, or as a statement piece in a wine cellar, gallery space, or large country kitchen. Its appeal lies in its honesty: this is not a refined court table, but a serious working object with real age, presence, and material integrity—exactly the kind of piece that anchors a room rather than fills it.
