Late 18th / Early 19th Century French Chinoiserie Commode with Marble Top

$18,600

A late 18th to early 19th century French Chinoiserie commode featuring a shaped serpentine façade and black japanned panels decorated with gilt scenic motifs. The lacquered reserves depict birds, flowering branches, and Oriental landscapes, framed within molded borders and set against a warm brown ground.

The four drawers follow a bombe profile and are fitted with ornate gilt bronze handles and escutcheons. The sides retain matching lacquered panels with figural and botanical decoration, creating a cohesive presentation on all visible surfaces.

The case rests on shaped bracket feet and is surmounted by a serpentine marble top with rounded corners. The marble is a later replacement, and the mounts may also have been changed at some point, as is common with period case pieces.

Drawer interiors retain early red-painted surfaces, and construction details are consistent with late 18th to early 19th century French cabinetry.

A decorative and architecturally strong example of French Chinoiserie taste transitioning from the late Ancien Régime into the early Empire period.
