Pair of Biedermeier Walnut Consoles with Lyre Supports and Marquetry, Circa 1840

A refined pair of Austrian Biedermeier consoles, circa 1840, executed in richly figured walnut veneer with ebonized accents and contrasting wood marquetry.

Each console features a rectangular top framed by a narrow ebonized border, above a single drawer centered with an elegant neoclassical marquetry panel. The motif—two stylized swans flanking an overflowing basket with scrolling foliage—is executed in light veneer inlaid into an ebonized ground, creating strong graphic contrast while maintaining the restraint characteristic of the Biedermeier period.

The bases are defined by sculptural ebonized lyre-form supports joined by slender vertical rods, all resting on a plinth platform veneered in walnut and centered with a circular inlaid medallion. Honey-toned foliate marquetry at the feet reinforces the classical vocabulary without overwhelming the clean architectural lines.

The rear is structurally solid with a central vertical support, typical of Central European construction. The pair retains excellent proportions and presence, suitable as consoles in an entry, flanking a fireplace, or as dramatic side tables in a living space.

The combination of warm walnut veneer, bold ebonized framing, and finely executed marquetry is consistent with Austrian or South German Biedermeier production of the late 1830s to early 1840s.
