Pair of French Directoire Style Walnut Bergères Chairs, 19th Century

$6,750

A handsome pair of French walnut bergères from the late 19th century, designed in the restrained neoclassical taste of the Directoire period. Each chair features a tall, gently reclining upholstered back framed by slender walnut uprights terminating in outward scrolls. The arms rest above upholstered side panels and are supported by turned baluster-form posts decorated with carved rosettes.

Additional carved details include stylized palmettes along the back uprights and leaf motifs on the square blocks above the front legs. The chairs are raised on turned front legs and gently splayed saber-form rear legs. Their warm, honey-toned walnut frames contrast attractively with the neutral cream-colored upholstery. Loose seat cushions provide additional comfort while preserving the chairs’ tailored appearance.

With their tall backs, elegant proportions, and understated carved decoration, these French bergères would make excellent fireside or reading chairs. They could also be placed opposite one another in a living room, library, bedroom, or private office.
