Pair of Italian Giltwood Dolphin Fragments on Lucite Bases

This striking pair of 19th-century Italian carved wood fragments in the form of stylized dolphins, now mounted on custom Lucite bases. Originally part of a larger decorative scheme—likely architectural or furniture ornamentation—these sculptural elements showcase the expressive curves and rich textural detail characteristic of Baroque and Rococo design. Each dolphin is hand-carved in a dynamic pose with a dramatically coiled tail, scalloped fins, and whimsical facial expression, rendered in deeply carved scales and gilt gesso. The original water-gilded surface has aged with subtle variation and warmth, revealing areas of reddish bole beneath the gold leaf.

Presented on clean-lined Lucite plinths, the fragments are elevated into a more contemporary decorative context, making them ideal for transitional or eclectic interiors.
