English Campaign-Style Mahogany Library Bookcase with Lattice Doors, 1850s
$22,000
An English mahogany and brass campaign-style library bookcase dating to the mid-19th century.
Constructed in two parts, the upper section features three wooden lattice doors opening to shelving. The diamond-patterned fretwork provides ventilation while maintaining a refined architectural presence.
The lower section is fitted with an arrangement of drawers—each with inset brass campaign pulls and keyholes—offering generous storage. Brass corner strapping reinforces the case and reflects the practical yet refined aesthetic associated with campaign furniture of the period.
The mahogany displays a strong natural figure, particularly along the drawer fronts and side panels. The interior retains a darker, well-preserved surface. The backboards and construction details are consistent with English cabinetmaking of the 19th century.
Though inspired by portable military furniture, this example appears intended more for domestic or colonial residence use rather than strict field deployment. Its proportions and craftsmanship suggest a well-made English piece designed for durability and elegance.
Ideal as a statement library cabinet, dining storage piece, or office bookcase.
