Pair of English 19th Century Oak Barley-Twist Stools with Upholstery

$4,500

A handsome pair of English oak stools from the 19th century, featuring richly turned barley-twist bases and newly upholstered seats. Each stool is topped with a rectangular cushioned seat covered in a neutral linen-like fabric, its understated tone providing a pleasing contrast with the dark, warm patina of the oak. A row of antiqued brass nailheads neatly finishes the upholstery along the lower edge.

The bases are particularly attractive, with four boldly carved barley-twist legs joined by coordinating barley-twist H-Form stretchers. Squared blocks punctuate the intersections of the stretchers and provide an architectural counterpoint to the spiraling turnings. Small turned feet complete the design.

The oak displays variations in its deep brown coloration, with lighter areas along the raised portions of the carving emphasizing the movement of the twist decoration. Their compact proportions make these stools versatile pieces that could be placed in front of a fireplace, beneath a console, beside a low table or used as occasional seating. Presented as a pair, they combine the decorative character of 19th century English furniture with practical scale and refreshed upholstery.
