19th Century Japanese Imari Porcelain Oval Charger with Floral and Bamboo Decor
$1,650
This 19th century Japanese Imari porcelain oval charger presents a vibrant and finely detailed composition in the traditional palette of cobalt blue, iron red, and touches of green and gilt. The central reserve features a flowering branch emerging beside a stylized terrace or fence, rendered in strong underglaze blue with iron red and delicate enamel accents. The design is lively yet balanced, framed by a bold cobalt band punctuated with floral cartouches.
The wide border is richly segmented, alternating geometric roundels with floral panels and bamboo motifs, creating a rhythmic and highly decorative perimeter. The interplay between dense ornament and open white ground reflects the aesthetic confidence of late Edo to Meiji period Imari wares, produced both for domestic use and export markets.
The underside is decorated in underglaze blue with scrolling vine motifs and pierced elements near the rim, adding visual interest even when viewed from below. The charger is currently fitted with a wire wall mount, allowing for immediate display. Generously sized and visually dynamic, it works beautifully as a wall accent in both traditional and eclectic interiors.
