19th Century Chinese Qing Dynasty Blue and White Porcelain Charger
$1,200
This 19th century Chinese porcelain charger from the Qing dynasty is painted in deep underglaze cobalt blue with a sweeping river landscape rendered in fluid tonal washes. The central composition depicts layered mountain formations rising along a tranquil waterway, with pavilions and trees nestled along the shoreline. Pine forms and architectural elements are articulated with confident, calligraphic brushwork, while darker cobalt accents define cliffs and rock contours, creating depth and atmospheric movement.
The broad rim is enclosed by a repeating geometric diaper border, forming a structured frame that contrasts elegantly with the organic landscape scene. The interplay of saturated cobalt and softer wash effects reflects traditional Chinese ink painting aesthetics translated into porcelain.
The underside is simply decorated with scattered floral sprigs and concentric rings at the foot, consistent with 19th century Qing export production. The glaze is smooth and luminous, with natural variations in cobalt intensity typical of hand-painted wares of the period.
At 18 inches in diameter, this charger works beautifully as a wall-mounted statement piece or displayed flat as a dramatic centerpiece on a dining or console table.
