19th Century Japanese Imari Porcelain Scalloped Square Platter, Meiji Period
$1,850
This 19th century Japanese Imari porcelain platter, dating to the Meiji period, is formed in an elegant scalloped square shape and richly decorated in the traditional Imari palette of cobalt blue, iron red, soft green, and gilt. The central reserve features a floral arrangement rising from a stylized vase, surrounded by scrolling foliage and blossoms rendered in layered enamel work with delicate gilt highlights.
The border is divided into alternating panels of geometric lattice panels and figural motifs, including cranes in flight and flowering branches, creating a dynamic yet balanced composition. Deep cobalt framing bands anchor the design, lending strong architectural structure to the surface while contrasting beautifully with the vibrant iron red grounds.
The gently scalloped rim softens the square form and adds movement to the silhouette, a characteristic feature seen in late 19th century export wares. The underside is minimally decorated in underglaze blue with simple motifs and concentric rings around the foot, consistent with Meiji period production.
Measuring 16.75 inches wide, this platter functions equally well as a wall-mounted decorative element or as a striking tabletop centerpiece.
