English 19th Century Walnut Folk Low Chair with Three-Legged Base
$1,800
An unusual English walnut low chair dating to the 19th century, displaying the distinctive sculptural character of traditional vernacular furniture. The chair stands on three splayed legs and features a remarkably low seat, measuring just 11.25 inches high.
Constructed principally from substantial planks of walnut, the chair has a broad seat with dramatically upturned ends, each terminating in a large carved and pierced loop. A tall, narrow plank back rises from the center and is crowned with a corresponding circular pierced handle, repeating the distinctive motif and giving the chair its memorable silhouette.
The construction is deliberately straightforward, with visible pegging and substantial timber emphasizing its rustic character. The walnut displays attractive grain throughout, along with the knots, marks and irregularities that give vernacular furniture much of its individuality. The three-legged arrangement provides a particularly strong profile when viewed from the sides and rear.
With its compact proportions and highly sculptural form, this English 19th century low chair would make an appealing accent beside a fireplace or hearth, or an interesting addition to a collection of folk and vernacular furniture.
