English Faux Bamboo Canterbury or Magazine Rack, Early 20th Century

This English faux bamboo piece dates to the early 20th century, circa 1900–1920, and takes the form of a Canterbury or magazine rack. Constructed in turned wood and finished to imitate bamboo, it reflects the continued popularity of the faux bamboo aesthetic in England well into the Edwardian period.

The structure features vertical spindle divisions designed to hold books, periodicals, or sheet music, resting above a flat base shelf. The frame is supported by slender legs joined by an X-form stretcher, providing both stability and visual lightness. Finials at the corners are capped with brass ball finials, a detail frequently seen on higher-quality English examples of this type.

Set on small casters, the piece was intended to be easily movable within a sitting room, library, or bedroom. Its narrow proportions make it particularly practical for use beside a chair or sofa, or as a decorative storage element in a study or hallway. The warm, aged finish and visible wear give it a relaxed, lived-in presence that works well in both traditional and eclectic interiors.
