Pair of French, 1870s Faux-Bamboo and Burlwood Semainiers with Marble Tops
$18,000
A pair of French faux bamboo and burl wood semainiers from the second quarter of the 19th century, with conforming marble tops and geometric design. Born at the end of the reign of France’s last Emperor Napoleon III, each of this pair of tall and narrow chests features a white veined marble top sitting above seven drawers. Designed to store a week’s supply of lingerie and shirts (semainier comes from the word ‘semaine’, translating as week in English) each chest is adorned with exquisite faux-bamboo accents. The upper drawer draws all the attention with its geometrical décor, while the six remaining ones let the beauty of the burl wood grain shine perfectly. The side panels are divided into three recessed sections that accentuate the organization of the front drawers. With their tall proportions and lovely décor, this pair of French semainiers, circa 1870 will bring an exquisite presence in any home, particularly in a bedroom or dressing room.
