American Neoclassical Bronze and Cut Crystal Lantern in the Manner of Caldwell
$3,750
An elegant American neoclassical hanging lantern dating to circa 1900, crafted in patinated bronze and fitted with a finely cut crystal body. The lantern features a sculptural bronze framework with scrolling arms rising from a decorative collar, supporting a suspension loop above. Classical detailing is evident throughout, including foliate ornament and a shaped finial with stylized grape cluster motif at the base.
The crystal shade is sharply faceted with geometric panels, creating a prismatic effect that enhances the diffusion of light while maintaining clarity. Its slightly tapered, baluster-like form gives the piece a refined vertical presence, well suited to more intimate spaces.
This lantern reflects the influence of turn-of-the-century American Beaux-Arts design, where classical forms were interpreted through high-quality materials and craftsmanship. Comparable examples were produced by New York makers such as Caldwell & Co., and this piece aligns closely with that aesthetic tradition.
With its moderate scale, the lantern is ideal for use in an entry vestibule, hallway, powder room, or layered lighting scheme where a decorative yet restrained statement is desired.
