English Jacobean Style Oak Oval Gateleg Table, circa 1880

An English oak gateleg table dating to the late 19th century, circa 1880. Based on practical forms found in 17th-century English country furniture, the table combines an oval drop-leaf top with a compact folding base.

The top is assembled from broad oak boards whose pronounced grain, knots and varied coloring give the surface considerable character. Each hinged leaf is supported when raised by a swinging gate fitted with a slender leg and reinforcing stretchers. When both leaves are lowered, the table measures only 9.5 inches deep, allowing it to be stored neatly against a wall or used as a narrow console.

The stationary frame is supported by substantial rectangular uprights raised on shaped horizontal feet, with long lower stretchers providing stability. Its restrained construction places the emphasis on the oak itself, which has acquired a warm, darkened patina through age and use.

Fully opened, the table provides an oval surface suitable for intimate dining, games or occasional display. Its folding construction and relatively modest proportions make it especially useful in interiors where adaptable furniture is valued.
