Pair of English Jacobean Revival Oak Barley-Twist Benches, circa 1900
$10,800
A handsome pair of English barley twist oak benches dating to the turn of the 20th century and designed in the Jacobean Revival taste. Each rectangular bench features a generously padded seat upholstered in a neutral cream-colored woven fabric. A continuous row of antiqued brass-tone nailheads follows the lower edge of the upholstery, providing a tailored contrast against the dark oak frames.
Each bench is supported by six boldly turned barley-twist legs arranged along the corners and centers of the long sides. The legs are joined by a substantial rectangular stretcher base with a central cross stretcher, giving the benches an attractive architectural presence as well as practical stability. Carved details accent the feet, while the dark brown finish reveals warm highlights along the raised spiral turnings.
Their versatile scale makes them suitable for placement at the foot of a bed, beneath a console, in an entryway or as occasional seating in a living room. Used together or separately, this well-matched pair combines the substantial character of English oak furniture with comfortable, understated upholstery.
